The Pitt County community is mourning the loss of Anthony Maimone, 41, following a tragic domestic violence incident and hours-long law enforcement standoff Tuesday morning near Highway 43 and Chicod School.
According to the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a residence at approximately 7:45 a.m. after receiving a report of a domestic violence incident. One individual was transported by emergency medical services to ECU Health Medical Center for treatment. Authorities have not released additional information regarding that person’s condition.
Officials said Anthony Maimone remained inside the residence after deputies arrived. Law enforcement officers made repeated attempts to communicate with him, but those efforts were unsuccessful. As the situation unfolded, Highway 43 was temporarily closed, nearby residents were notified, and additional emergency resources were deployed to the area.
The response included multiple agencies and specialized units, including the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, tactical teams, and emergency personnel. Officers worked for several hours to resolve the situation safely while continuing attempts to establish contact.
After the prolonged standoff, members of the tactical team entered the residence and found Anthony Maimone deceased. Authorities said preliminary findings indicate he died from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The roadway was reopened shortly before 12:30 p.m., bringing the immediate law enforcement response to an end. Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, and the case remains under active investigation.
Anthony Maimone’s death has left family, friends, neighbors, and members of the Pitt County community reflecting on the tragedy. Loved ones are mourning his passing while remembering the life he lived beyond the events that unfolded.
