A lifelong Marion native, Derek Wilson earned the affectionate nickname “Big Funky” through his larger-than-life spirit and warm sense of humor. Friends say he had a unique ability to make everyone feel welcome, leaving a lasting impression through his generosity, encouragement, and genuine care for others. Whether among family, teammates, or neighbors, he was known for lifting spirits and building lasting friendships.
Wilson graduated from Erskine College in 2003, where he proudly played for the school’s baseball team. During his time as a student-athlete, he developed lifelong friendships and was admired for his dedication, teamwork, and positive attitude. Former teammates continue to remember him not only for his contributions on the field but also for the camaraderie and support he offered to everyone around him.
While athletics played an important role in his life, those closest to Derek say his greatest joy came from his family. He is survived by his wife, Kristen Mabus Wilson, and their twin daughters, Brantley Grace Wilson and Brynnley Faith Wilson. He is also survived by his parents, Bryan Wade and Joy Smith Wilson of Marion, and his sister, Alicia Dell Wilson of Wilmington, North Carolina. A member of Lake Bowen Baptist Church, Wilson was remembered as a man of faith who lived with compassion and humility. Visitation for Derek Wilson will be held on Thursday, July 2, from 2:15 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. at The Wood Mortuary in Greer, South Carolina. A memorial service will follow at 4:00 p.m. in The Wood Mortuary Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial donations be made to Black Tie Boston Rescue or the Erskine College Baseball program in his memory.
