A fatal shooting at a shopping plaza near the Berlin-Hudson town line in Massachusetts led to a massive police response Tuesday afternoon and culminated in a lengthy standoff on Interstate 495, where the suspected gunman was later found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
According to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, Berlin police officers were dispatched around 3:30 p.m. to Highland Commons shopping plaza following reports of an assault in progress. As officers responded, emergency dispatchers received additional information indicating that gunfire may have been involved.
When officers arrived at the plaza, they discovered an adult male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the parking lot. Emergency personnel immediately attempted lifesaving measures, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
The shooting occurred at Highland Commons, a busy commercial area located along the border of Berlin and Hudson. Law enforcement quickly secured the area as investigators from the Berlin Police Department, Hudson Police Department, Massachusetts State Police, and the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office launched a homicide investigation.
Authorities said the suspect fled the scene after the shooting. A witness who reportedly observed the incident followed the suspect’s vehicle and provided real-time information to law enforcement, helping officers track the vehicle’s movements.
Massachusetts State Police later located the suspect’s pickup truck on Interstate 495 near Lowell. Troopers initiated a high-risk response that resulted in a prolonged standoff involving numerous specialized units, including the State Police Special Tactical Operations Team, crisis negotiators, bomb squad personnel, drones, and robotic equipment.
As the situation unfolded, both northbound and southbound lanes of Interstate 495 were shut down for several hours, creating significant traffic delays throughout the region. Transportation officials implemented detours while law enforcement established a secure perimeter around the vehicle.
After hours of negotiations and tactical operations, authorities determined the suspect had died inside the pickup truck from what investigators described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Officials later confirmed that the suspect and the victim were acquainted, though no information regarding a possible motive has been released.
Investigators have not yet publicly identified either the victim or the suspect, pending notification of family members and the continuation of the investigation. Authorities emphasized that the case remains active and that detectives are still working to establish the full sequence of events that led to the deadly encounter.
Following the conclusion of the standoff, Massachusetts State Police announced that the public safety incident had ended and all lanes of Interstate 495 were reopened to traffic.
The Worcester County District Attorney’s Office and Massachusetts State Police continue to investigate the fatal shooting. Officials are asking anyone with information that may assist the investigation to contact law enforcement as detectives continue gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses.
