Qasim Abbas Al-Khafaji Obituary, Death – Dearborn Man Dies After Trench Collapse at Michigan Construction Site
The Metro Detroit Arab-American community is mourning the tragic loss of Qasim Abbas Al-Khafaji, also known as Kassem Alkhafaji, a 23-year-old Dearborn resident who died following a fatal workplace accident after a trench collapse at a construction site in Handy Township, Michigan.

According to the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m. on July 1, 2026, near the intersection of Grand River Avenue and Nicholson Road. Qasim was working in an excavation area during construction work involving the installation of underground storage tanks when the trench suddenly collapsed, trapping him beneath a large amount of soil.

Fellow workers immediately rushed to his aid and began digging in an attempt to reach him before emergency responders arrived. Deputies, firefighters, and rescue personnel quickly responded to the scene and joined the rescue effort. After being extricated from the collapsed trench, Qasim was given emergency medical treatment. Despite lifesaving efforts, he was tragically pronounced deceased at the scene.

Authorities have confirmed that an investigation into the fatal workplace accident is ongoing.

MIOSHA Investigation Underway

The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) has launched a full investigation into the incident, working alongside local authorities to determine what caused the trench collapse.

Investigators will review whether proper excavation safety procedures were followed, including the use of trench protection systems, soil stabilization measures, employee training, and compliance with state safety regulations. Officials noted that investigations of this nature typically take time, and no preliminary conclusions have been released.

At this stage, authorities have not confirmed any safety violations or determined the exact cause of the collapse.
